Clouded leopard

Neofelis nebulosa

Named for the cloud-like patterns on their coats, clouded leopards are an elusive, medium-sized wild cat species native to lowland tropical forests of southeast Asia. They are among the cat family’s best climbers, able to climb upside-down under tree branches and hang from their hind feet. Several unique adaptations give clouded leopards their amazing arboreal advantages. First, large paws with sharp claws allow the cats to maintain a good grip on branches. Second, short, stout legs and a long tail (the same length as the body) provide excellent balance. Finally, rotating ankle joints on the hind feet enable the cats to descend a tree head-first. Clouded leopards also have canine teeth that are longer (2 inches in length) in proportion to body size than any other wild cat species.

Zoo Atlanta’s first clouded leopard in 20 years, Moby was born on April 23, 1996 and arrived at the Zoo in April 2004. Despite his small stature (three feet long, 18 inches tall and 37 pounds), he is large on personality!
