  How to Help

There are a variety of ways you can help the effort to preserve golden lion tamarins, so you can get involved no matter how much of a commitment you want to make.

Responsible Consumerism:

The first and easiest way to make a difference is through responsible consumerism. The biggest threat to golden lion tamarins is the destruction of their habitat by deforestation in the process of exploiting resources found in and under the rainforest. Rainforest trees are felled for sale as hardwoods. Forests are cleared to mine bauxite, which is used to make aluminum. By making small changes to your consumption habits, you can help the development of sustainable practices that will reduce the threat of deforestation.

  • Buy only wood and wood products that have been produced by responsible, sustainable means. Visit the World Wildlife Funds Consumer Wood Products Information Center to find out how.
  • Recycle your aluminum cans. When aluminum is reused, it reduces the need to mine bauxite to make more.

Make a Donation:

By making a donation to an organization involved in golden lion tamarin conservation, you help to make possible the efforts to save these beautiful animals. Money from donations is used to fund research, breeding and reintroduction programs like the Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation Program, and to help secure and preserve the natural habitat where tamarins make their home.

Get Involved:

If you'd like to get personally involved, volunteer or consider a career in zoology or conservation biology. You will find the experience highly rewarding in many ways.
