| ATLANTA – March 28, 2007 – Zoo Atlanta animal management staff announced today that Mei Lan, the giant panda cub born Sept. 6, has been given access to her outdoor habitat. She did not venture far from the door to the outdoor habitat this morning and preferred to remain in her indoor habitat with her mother in view of Zoo guests. However, as she becomes more accustomed to the new outdoor area, she will begin to venture in and explore the new surroundings.
Staff has been busy “baby-proofing” the exhibit over the last couple of weeks to ensure the safety of the cub as she explores this new habitat. Extra padding and bedding has been placed in some areas to support the cub as she becomes more accustomed to these new surroundings.
At 27.3 pounds and slightly over 6 months old, she is growing rapidly and changing on a weekly basis.
“This is a fantastic age. She is at the height of her cuteness and is still very small compared to her mother,” said Zoo Atlanta Curator of Giant Pandas and Research Dr. Rebecca Snyder. “There is nothing like watching her run, climb, play with her mother and experience the world around her.”
This announcement coincides with an extension of available hours for visitors to see Mei Lan. Over the last few weeks, she has become increasingly comfortable with her surroundings. As a result, her availability will now coincide with Zoo Atlanta’s regular operating hours.
A timed-ticket is currently required to visit Zoo Atlanta’s giant panda habitat. Along with having the opportunity to visit Mei Lan and her parents Lun Lun and Yang Yang, visitors will also be provided with an organized tour of the giant panda exhibit. The tour will include in-depth information about each of the giant pandas, as well as details about Zoo Atlanta’s research, education and conservation efforts in China.
Exclusive giant panda viewing will continue to be offered daily from 9:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. for Members of Zoo Atlanta only. Panda exhibit tour tickets will not be needed during this time.
Membership information and information on the availability of panda cub viewing tickets can be found at zooatlanta.org, the Zoo Atlanta admissions gate or by calling 404-624-9453 (WILD).
