ATLANTA–Oct. 26, 2006 – Zoo Atlanta’s 50-day-old female giant panda cub vocalized today during her weekly exam.  This vocalization illustrates that she is becoming aware of her environment and is more sensitive to sound.  The cub has also gained over half a pound and grown one inch. Veterinary staff report that her growth is right on track.  Her current weight is 5.5 pounds and her length is 18 inches.

During this fifth exam, it was discovered that her ear flaps are more erect, although it cannot yet be confirmed that her ears are fully open. She was also seen pushing up on her feet and raising her head, indicating an increased level of activity and strength.  The cub’s teeth are expected to appear soon.  Veterinary staff witnessed at least two incisors beginning to erupt.
